What is shoulder replacement surgery?

Shoulder replacement surgery involves removal of damaged parts of the shoulder replacing it with artificial components, called a prosthesis. The procedure includes either the replacement of the head of the ball (humerus bone) or replacement of both the ball and the socket (glenoid).

How long does it take for a patient to recover after a shoulder replacement surgery procedure?

Generally, the patient can leave the hospital on the first, second or third day after surgery. Patients will need a sling to support and protect the shoulder for the first 2 to 4 weeks after surgery. Patients can continue to do simple activities such as eating, dressing and grooming in two weeks following the surgery. It is expected to have little pain at night and on the movement of the joint for several weeks after surgery.
