Teeth whitening

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening helps to whiten teeth and remove stains and discolouration. Since it could dramatically improve the appearance of your teeth, whitening is one of the most popular cosmetic dentistry treatments. The majority of dentists provide teeth whitening services. Whitening is a continuous process, not a one-time event. If you want to keep the brighter hue, you'll have to repeat the process from time to time.

Why do you need teeth whitening?

You may require a teeth whitening procedure if your teeth are discoloured or stained due to various reasons. Many reasons can be prevented yet there are some which are out of control. Some of such reasons include drinking tea, coffee, wine, cola, smoking cigarettes, chewing tobacco, high fluoride intake, ageing, certain medications etc.

How does teeth whitening work?

The most common type of teeth whitening procedure is done in a dental clinic is the professional bleaching. It is done by your dentist after carefully isolating the gums and other soft tissues from the teeth by applying a gel or rubber dam. The whitening product (hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide) will be then applied onto your teeth by using a specially made tray. When the active ingredient breaks down the oxygen will get into the enamel and the colour of the tooth will be made lighter. The treatment procedure requires multiple visits and usually takes around two to four weeks to complete the procedure. Other forms of teeth whitening are laser whitening or power whitening. In this, after applying the whitening product a light or laser is shone on to the ingredient to activate the chemical. Power whitening procedure will speed up the whitening process and will make the teeth lighter when compared to conventional bleaching.

What causes teeth discoloration?

There are various reasons why your teeth may get discoloured. Not all teeth stains are the same, and if you've tried and failed to whiten your teeth with home methods, you might need a professional cleaning. The two types of tooth discolouration are extrinsic discoloration and intrinsic discoloration.

Extrinsic discolouration is caused by beverages or smoking, and liquids such as red wine, tea, or coffee can cause your teeth to yellow.

Intrinsic discolouration is caused by staining on the inner of the tooth. Infection, ageing, medicine, childhood illness, or dental trauma can all cause this type of discoloration.

Professional teeth whitening is the only approach to fully brighten your teeth if these conditions are the cause of your discoloration.

Benefits of teeth whitening procedure.

Teeth are an important aspect of your face because they are the first thing people notice when they look at you. As a result, when you whiten your teeth, you're not just changing your look; you're also improving your overall appearance! Following are some of the benefits of teeth whitening.

- Whitening is easy and painless.

- Professional teeth whitening gives instant results.

- A new smile can enhance your appearance and confidence.

- No anaesthesia required for this procedure.

- Long lasting results.

- Enhanced Self-Esteem.

- Better oral health.

- Ability to make you appear younger and even diminish the appearance of wrinkles.

Things to keep in mind before teeth whitening

- Prior to undergoing the dental whitening process, you must meet with your dentist to ensure that you are a good candidate for teeth whitening and to discuss the operation's risks and side effects.

- A dentist or hygienist will carefully clean the teeth before beginning the whitening process, removing any surface stains and tartar.

- The dentist will next take a record of the shade/color of the teeth before proceeding with the procedure.

- To avoid any potential damage or burning, it is critical that your dentist isolates your gums and lips with a protective substance.

- Eye protection (goggles) is also provided to protect the eyes from any injury caused by the laser or any unintentional sprays of peroxide.

Things to keep in mind after teeth whitening procedure

- Consult your dentist if your gums appear to be white or inflamed.

- Whitening is not a long-term fix. The stains will reappear, if you smoke or consume a lot of staining foods or beverages

- You may not need another whitening procedure for 6 to 12 months if you avoid these sources of discoloration.

- Re-whitening can be done at home or at the dentist's clinic. You may whiten your teeth as often as you need if you have a custom-made mouthpiece and whitening chemical at home.

- Consult your dentist about your whitening plan. You can discuss which whitening products might be most effective for you.

What is the cost of teeth whitening treatment?

The conventional bleaching will cost you more than INR 7000 in India and the laser teeth whitening will cost you more than INR 12000.
