We are all humans and hence mood swings are normal to some extent. What is meant by this is someday we feel overjoyed. But on some days, we will get sad. But these changes won’t affect us to lead a healthy life.

On the other side, you are having a situation where you switch from extremely happy to extremely depressed regularly. If you are in this kind of situation, you should consult a doctor.

These rapid mood swings can happen due to many reasons like mental health, substance use, hormones, or other health conditions.

As we mentioned earlier, if you have severe mood shifts, you should consult a doctor. You have mood shifts, but it doesn’t affect your life negatively.

Before we directly discuss the treatment for rapid mood swings, let’s look at the common causes of why this is happening.

Most of the time, lifestyle plays a major role in mood swings.

Here are the sudden changes:

  • Do not eat healthily
  • Feeling stressed or overwhelmed
  • Not getting enough sleep
  • Having a sudden life-changing incident like changing jobs or something like that.

Here are some common mood disorders.

Bipolar disorders

It occurs when a person experience periods of extreme emotion with highs and lows. It can happen frequently in a year. The exact cause of bipolar disorder isn’t known, but a combination of genetics, environment and altered brain structure and chemistry may play a role.

Major depressive disorder (MDD)

In this case, you experience sadness for a long time. It is also called clinical depression.

Women are more vulnerable than men with mood swings due to the hormonal changes during menstruation.

Here are some of the common causes of mood swings in women:

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)

It is possible to cure your mood swings. Either you can try some methods at home, most of the mood swings will be reduced in this way. If not, it can be a serious issue. So, it is better to consult a doctor.

Here are some of the methods you can apply to your lifestyle.

Exercise regularly

Exercising is a great way to boost both mental and physical health. When you exercise, a hormone is produced, called endorphin. It helps to reduce stress. Target 30 minutes or one hour five days a week and do it regularly. It will be a huge advantage for you for sure.

Get better sleep

Getting enough sleep is a mandatory thing to lead a healthy life. Target 7-8 hours sleep per day. Also, try to avoid all the distractions while you sleep. Not getting 7-8 hours per day but sleeping well is much more important.

Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and sugar

These are a type of stimulants and depressants.

Maybe you will argue drinking caffeine can give you energy. But you don’t understand that it can also make you nervous.

Alcohol is not so different. It is a depressant that can turn bad moods worse or behave irrationally. Sweet and delicious foods can fluctuate your blood sugar level.

So try to step back in these.

Try calcium supplements

Many researchers showed that calcium supplements can help relieve symptoms of depression, anxiety, and emotional fluctuation in PMS. More than mood swings, calcium can also protect from deterioration. Better for women who are going through perimenopause.

Now, let’s go through some medical treatments for mood swings.

These are the drugs used against bipolar disorder. Citalopram (Celexa®), escitalopram (Lexapro®), sertraline (Zoloft®), fluoxetine (Prozac®), and paroxetine (Paxil®) are some of the commonly used drugs.

Mood stabilizer

These help people who are affected with bipolar disorders to regulate mood swings. They help with abnormal brain activity. Lithium and anticonvulsant drugs, such as valproic acid (Valproic®), lamotrigine (Lamictal®) are some examples of this.
